Researchers at Fudan University in Shanghai analysed blood sampled from 175 patients who had been released from the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center. The results showed nearly a third had low levels of antibodies and in some patients, they could not be detected at all, the South China Morning Post reports. An antibody is a Y-shaped protein secreted by certain types of white blood cells that have the ability to identify and neutralize pathogens such as viruses and bacteria....

The distribution plan is part of the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program for COVID-19 Vaccination, which connects both national pharmacy chains and independent pharmacies with states and territories to boost vaccination efforts across the country. The program will start with a small number of retail pharmacies and ramp up to about half the pharmacies in the U.S. The first shipment will include a million vaccine doses to about 6,500 pharmacies around the country, according to Jeffrey Zients, the White House COVID-19 coordinator, who announced the program during a White House briefing for reporters last week....

While there are nearly 100 experimental COVID-19 vaccines now in clinical trials, only seven intranasal vaccines are currently being developed. Randall and Lund reviewed data on all seven. Six of these vaccines use a harmless live virus, called a vector virus, to deliver the COVID-19 virus into the nose....

Vermont, which is the most vaccinated state, with 73 percent of its population fully jabbed, saw an 18 percent rise in new daily COVID cases over the last 14 days before November 24, according to New York Times data. The northeastern state recorded an average of 370 new COVID-19 cases a day over the past week before Wednesday. Newsweek has contacted the state’s Governor’s office for comment. Rhode Island, which is 72 percent vaccinated, saw a 69 percent rise in new cases during that same 14-day time period....

In the U.S. alone, the number of people who have died with COVID-19 exceeded 900,000 this month and the number is increasing all the time. Around the world, the death toll is over 5.8 million according to the World Health Organization (WHO), though some estimates of excess mortality—a measure comparing all deaths recorded with those expected to occur—have put that figure close to 20 million. What this means is that burial facilities have faced unprecedented pressure as they attempt to allocate space and resources to store the bodies of those who have passed away....

According to information from Johns Hopkins University, which uses data from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), for the week of December 6 to December 12, 14,952 ICU beds are in use for COVID-19 patients. Overall, 78 percent of ICU beds in the U.S. are being used, according to the Johns Hopkins University information. The number of ICU beds currently in use for COVID-19 patients is up from the summer, as the graph shows below 10,000 ICU beds occupied for COVID-19 patients throughout most of July....

Moderna announced on Monday that study results suggested its vaccine could neutralize the emerging variants, including the B.1.1.7 strain first identified in the U.K. and the B.1.351 strain first seen in South Africa. The findings were submitted to bioRxiv, an online repository for biological science papers that have yet to be peer-reviewed and published. The study will now undergo more rigorous scrutiny. The study used blood samples from eight people who had received two doses of Moderna’s mRNA-1273 vaccine and samples from two primates that were also immunized....
