These images reveal an important gender bias associated with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields that persists even in young children. As children draw who they see in these roles, this likely reflects the underrepresentation of women in science. While some strides forward have been made in recent years to increase the presence of women and women of color in STEM—a necessary step in order to change perceptions of who “looks” like a scientist—the COVID pandemic is very likely to set back the minimal progress that has been achieved over the past few decades....

A new program was announced by the Department of Health and Human Services known as the Antiviral Program for Pandemics. The program will help speed up clinical trials of potential drugs that can be used to treat COVID-19 symptoms. Should the drugs be approved in the clinical trials, they may start to be available by the end of the year. Dr. Anthony Fauci hopes for the drugs to be used when COVID patients first test positive for the virus or develop symptoms....

Both the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines appear to provide some protection after the first dose. But their headline efficacy ratings are only based on assessments of people who have received two shots. Pfizer-BioNTech Clinical trials evaluating the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, which requires two shots given 21 days apart, reported an efficacy of 52 percent after the first dose. In a large-scale Phase III trial, participants were given either two full doses with a 21-day interval or a placebo....

The New York Times and Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that a group of team owners sent a letter to Jones’ attorney, David Boies, expressing displeasure over Jones’ interference in contract talks between Goodell and the league’s Compensation Committee. Jones’ actions are “detrimental to the league’s best interests,” the owners wrote in the letter.
