The most obvious splits-driven stack today is the Tigers, but the Royals and Giants offer up good options, too. For our DraftKings GPP lineup, we’re investing a good amount into our pitchers (of course), but we’re not going with the top guy, Noah Syndergaard. We’re not doubting Thor, but his matchup against the Phillies and rapidly improving Aaron Nola might not be as sure of a thing as it appears on first blush. Instead, we’re saving a few bucks with some pitchers who have similar upsides. We’re going to a late-night game for our primary stack, picking on an inexperienced “veteran” pitcher....
Some of the “better” pitchers going today haven’t pitched particularly well this year (Aaron Sanchez, Joe Ross), while several other “lesser” pitchers (Miguel Gonzalez, Wade Miley) have been dealing. We’re a little worried about Miley because how well the Yankees hit lefties, but his high K-rate still puts him in play in GPPs. Mike Leake looks like a solid, “safe” play in cash games or GPPs where you just want someone different than the big guns....
The schedule has three games in the afternoon, most notably the Twins-Padres game in San Diego that features a matchup between Ervin Santana and Luis Perdomo. Both pitchers have high potential for a good day. Masahiro Tanaka also pitches a day game against the Tigers, and he’s been doing well lately, coming off a career-best 14 strikeouts against the Rays. Dallas Keuchel takes the top spot, despite a bad outing last time out....
Today looks like a boom-or-bust day in the pitching world. Gio Gonzalez against the Mets? Francisco Liriano against the Braves? Rich Hill against the Rangers? All could be dominant; all could blow up. Technically that’s true about everyone, but notoriously high-walk pitchers are especially vulnerable. Ironically, two of the three “safest” pitchers today are facing each other (Johnny Cueto, Drew Pomeranz), so perhaps by default, David Price is the guy who should be at the head of all cash game lineups (and probably GPPs, too)....
Today’s Playbook will only cover the 10 evening games and not the two afternoon contests, which aren’t even included on DraftKings. With lineup questions and ongoing weather concerns, there’s just too much risk playing in all-day contests anyway, especially on FanDuel with no late lineup swaps.
