Clearly, we’re focusing on the Tigers (vs. Jonathon Niese) and Cardinals (vs. Taylor Jungmann) to supply a ton of offense, as six of eight offensive players come from those two teams. We’re also leaning heavily on the Red Sox, paying up for David Price (the highest-priced SP in what is actually a decent collection of starters) and hoping Hanley Ramirez can keep the good times rolling back in Fenway. We’ll start with the pitchers, where Jon Lester is facing a Reds team that has been crushing lefties this year (.876 OPS), Jacob deGrom is facing the majors’ top offense (Nationals), and Johnny Cueto is pitching in Colorado. We still like Lester, who’s allowed just two runs all year, but deGrom, who’s been equally as dominating, gets bumped down a few spots because of how well the Nationals have been hitting....
After Hill, it starts to get sketchy with possible picks. Kyle Freeland has been pitching well, but he is much better at Coors (3.21) than on the road (4.12) and faces the Nationals. Adam Conley has returned from the minors in dominant fashion, but he isn’t dependable. Mike Leake had his best outing after struggling badly in his three outings before that, and Dinelson Lamet and Ty Blach have been up and down all season....
Chris Sale, Lance McCullers, and Robbie Ray are all high-K studs, and Jose Berrios would’ve been included in that group prior to his two-start slump. All make good choices in both cash and GPPs, but if you’re trying to save money but still hit on a high-strikeout SP, the resurgent Rich Hill and red-hot Jacob Faria are great choices. Mike Foltynewicz and Dinelson Lamet are two more high-upside guys who have plenty of risk to go with their potential rewards....
Carlos Carrasco narrowly comes in second and Jacob deGrom just behind. Carrasco racked up 10 strikeouts in six innings last time out, and he faces a struggling Giants offense ranked fourth worst against righties. Although deGrom has been dominant, his lone slip-up the past two months was against the Cardinals, when he gave up four home runs, but he still went seven innings and got the win. Among lower-priced pitchers, Dan Straily is a good choice....
Warning: Don’t get cute on the mound today. With Clayton Kershaw, Chris Sale, Stephen Strasburg starting, and even David Price and Johnny Cueto in tough matchups, there are going to be some huge pitching performances today. Make sure you pay up to get your share of those points. There are still a handful of aces on the mound – particularly in the Red Sox-Indians and Astros-Yankees makeup games – but it should be much easier to find pitching sleepers and hitter matchups to exploit. As we highlighted in our hitter splits article, finding batters facing pitchers who struggle against lefties/righties is a solid strategy when making your lineup picks. Tuesday’s MLB schedule has nine games on tap, with the Tigers-White Sox makeup game being the only afternoon offering. The Giants-Diamondbacks, Angels-A’s, and Padres-Dodgers all get underway after 9:30 pm ET. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending how you look at it), six of our top-10 pitchers will start in one of those four games. Justin Verlander (No. 3) and Jose Quintana (No. 6) are basically off the radar in FanDuel and DraftKings contests, but with the three late games taking place in Phoenix, San Diego, and Oakland, respectively, you can feel confident using those pitchers in evening contests....
