Unfortunately, the splits don’t point to many values or stacking opportunities during the early slate, but the early evening schedule features some nice matchups for the Cardinals, A’s, and even the Reds. In the late games, you can bet you’ll see a lot of Dodgers stacks, but being brave enough to use Giants and Red Sox in a David Price-Madison Bumgarner matchup could really pay off considering how well certain players on both teams hit lefties....
You can put together a big Pirates stack for their early game against San Diego lefty Christian Friedrich, and Rangers’ righties should be a popular choice against Chad Bettis, who has a noticeable reverse-platoon split. Four of today’s five lefties are pitching during the evening slate, but Jon Lester and Danny Duffy are both solid options, so it’s more likely that you’ll fade lefthanded hitters against them instead of trying to stack righties....
You don’t necessarily need to spend up for a pitcher, but if you do, there should be plenty of value hitters from which to choose. On top of the players with favorable splits listed below, you also have a bunch who are facing very suspect righthanded pitching tonight (see the bottom of our SP rankings). To be fair, it’s not necessarily a good idea to go sleeper shopping for guys facing aces like Chris Sale (vs. Mariners) or Jon Lester (vs. Mets), but we still like to point out the players who traditionally hit very well against southpaws. If, say, Franklin Gutierrez has a good game, you’ll have a big leg up on your competitors in FanDuel and DraftKings tournaments. However, for cash games, you’re better off using one or two value bats against the mediocre pitchers below, plus paying up for a few studs....
Madison Bumgarner will grab a ton of attention and deservedly so. The Diamondbacks have the third worst K-rate and wOBA against lefties, and Bumgarner is coming off seven innings of shutout ball against the Dodgers. James Paxton and Jacob deGrom should continue their recent dominance, and strikeout machine Jacob Faria has a favorable matchup against the strikeout-prone Brewers. Kevin Gausman is likely the best option in the boom-or-bust department. In his past three starts, Gausman is booming (3-0, 20....
Even worse, Stephen Strasburg starts in Monday’s lone afternoon game, so he isn’t available on tonight’s main slate. Lance McCullers, despite giving up five runs and striking out just three in 4.1 innings in his last outing, is clearly today’s top option. Jon Lester is also coming off a brutal outing (nine baserunners in just two-thirds of an inning) and the Braves actually hit lefties well, so he might be a sucker’s play tonight....
Weather wise, I have to say, I don’t know how on Earth that Braves-Cubs game is going to play, but I’ve seen stranger things, and I have to account for the possibility of those strange things happening. For the late slate, there’s some rain forecasted that could affect the Reds-Pirates game, but I feel there’s a better chance of the rain clearing for that one compared to the game at Wrigley....
