This is fantastic news not just for workers but for the entire country. Our economy and country do better when workers do better. And workers do better when they are organized, which is a good reminder to politicians. Despite the recent passing of the Democrat-backed Inflation Reduction Act and the glimmer of hope it’s given working Americans, some labor union members are concerned with what the upcoming midterm holds for those on the left side of the aisle....

The Protecting Our Democracy Act, as it’s been dubbed by House Democrats, would strengthen congressional power and oversight of the Executive Branch while curtailing a president’s authority and potential overreach—or abuses of power, according to Democrats. The bill is in direct response to President Donald Trump’s tenure, his administration’s brash attitude toward Congress and controversial actions. Meant to complement the anti-corruption bill known as H.R. 1 that House Democrats passed in March 2019, the newly introduced measure foreshadows the kinds of changes Democrats are eyeing under a new Congress and presidency—and most importantly, less Republican resistance....

On June 2, a 39-year-old melting specialist died at a Caterpillar-owned foundry in Mapleton, Illinois, after falling into an “11-foot-deep” pot of molten iron that had been heated to over 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. An investigation by the Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) found the foundry “routinely exposed employees to unprotected fall hazards,” while they worked. OSHA Regional Administrator Bill Donovan said in a statement: “A worker’s life could have been spared if Caterpillar had made sure required safety protections were in place, a fact that only adds to this tragedy....

Jeter’s website, The Players’ Tribune, is doing so well he’s decided to use the brand and open a restaurant named after the site. Tampa Bay Business Journal reported Jeter entered a proposal to open The Players’ Tribune Bar & Grill in a 3,439-square-foot space inside the Tampa International Airport. “Come beyond the velvet rope to enjoy the VIP atmosphere,” Jeter’s proposal said. “Not a sports bar … a sports lounge....

The number of cases increased by over 50 percent between early December and January 15, according to a study carried out by researchers at Imperial College London and Ipsos Mori, despite the country being put into third lockdown from January 5. Throat and nose swabs carried out between January 6 and January 15, found 1,962 positive tests from 142,909 swabs. The report’s authors said: “During the initial 10 days of the third COVID-19 lockdown in England in January 2021, prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 was very high with no evidence of decline....

One paper published in the journal Brain found COVID-19 patients can experience hallucinations, strokes, and delirium. The authors compiled cases of neurological problems in 43 COVID-19 patients treated at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London between April 9 and May 15. The cases were reported to a multidisciplinary team set up in March 2020 specifically to monitor neurological issues in COVID-19 patients. They placed patients into five categories depending on their clinical features and scan results....

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) panel on Wednesday acknowledged a likely association between the COVID-19 vaccines and rare cases of myocarditis or pericarditis in adolescents and young adults, but officials say the benefits of vaccination still outweigh the risks. “[Myocarditis] has been around for a while. Traditionally, there have been thought to have viral triggers, although there can be others,” Matthew Oster, MD, a member of the CDC COVID-19 Vaccine Task Force said during the meeting....
