Chase Elliott took home the checkered flag in the Can-Am Duel No. 1, while Denny Hamlin won Duel No. 2.

We already knew that Elliott and Dale Earnhardt Jr. would start in the front row for the Daytona 500, but the rest of the starting grid was up for grabs. 

Thursday’s Can-Am Duels determined the rest of the 40-car field by way of two 150-mile qualifying races.

Corey LaJoie and D.J. Kennington joined Elliott Sadler and Brendan Gaughan as the four open teams to fill the Daytona 500 field.

For the Duel at Daytona races, drivers who qualified on Feb. 19 in odd-numbered positions competed in the first duel, and drivers qualifying in the even-numbered positions competed in the second duel.

The 150-mile qualifying races at Daytona are worth points to the top-10 drivers on a 10-to-1 scale, but the winners do not get bonus points for the playoffs.

NOTE: A.J. Allmendinger, Martin Truex Jr., and Chris Buescher failed post-race inspection Thursday. All three drivers, along with Jimmie Johnson, Paul Menard and Ryan Blaney (moving to backup car) will officially line up where they qualified, but will have to drop to the rear of the field before the start of the Daytona 500.
