Originally known as the Busch Clash, the race began as a 20-lap shootout among pole winners from the previous season.
The race was renamed the Bud Shootout in 1998 and expanded to two 25-lap segments. It became the Budweiser Shootout in 2001 and was expanded to 70 laps.

Now sponsored by series sponsor Sprint, the current format is selected by a fan vote, which will be announced just before the race.
Dale Earnhardt tops the all-time list of winners of the event with six victories. More recently, Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick each have three wins.
