CALL TO THE ‘PEN
Brad Boxberger was back in the ninth inning for the Rays on Tuesday, throwing a perfect frame en route to his 24th save. Jake McGee, who had earned the save in Tampa’s last save chance, pitched the seventh. Boxberger pitched the eighth inning in that game. Boxberger has been the preferred option in the ninth inning for most of the season, and he’s currently riding a five-game scoreless streak, but there’s no guarantee he’ll get the Rays’ next save chance.
Carson Smith had to come on in the eighth inning and clean up Fernando Rodney’s mess for the Mariners on Tuesday, and Smith stayed in and tossed a scoreless ninth for his eighth save of the season. Smith is pretty much locked in as Seattle’s closer right now.
WEATHER WATCH
It should be a clear day around the league, as only the Dodgers-Braves (40-percent chance of rain) and Pirates-Royals (28) are in danger of seeing delays.
