STARTING PITCHER RANKINGS

CALL TO THE ‘PEN

It was a bad day for Mariners closers old and new, as both Fernando Rodney (hit, walk, two runs) and Carson Smith (two hits, two walks, two runs) got roughed up on Saturday. Rodney’s mishap happened in the eighth inning with the Mariners holding a two-run lead, and Smith’s happened during a tie game in the ninth. It’s unlikely this will do much to change Seattle’s bullpen heirarchy other than move Rodney further away from regaining his old closer’s job.

Robert Osuna was back in the ninth for the Blue Jays on Saturday, nailing down his fifth save of the year. Bo Schultz got the call in Toronto’s last save chance, but that was only because Osuna needed a breather.

In an odd move, the Indians brought in Cody Allen to get the final out of the eighth inning in a game they were losing 8-2. Allen got the out, though not before allowing a single. Allen had allowed seven baserunners and three runs over his three previous appearances, so perhaps manager Terry Francona just wanted him to work in a low-leverage situation. It’s safe to assume he still has plenty of leash in regards to the closer’s job, but perhaps this situation bears a little more scrutiny over the coming days. Bryan Shaw would take over if anything happens to Allen.

WEATHER WATCH

A few spots could be in danger of delays today, with the Braves-Cardinals (63-percent chance of rain) leading the way. The Tigers-Red Sox (54), Dodgers-Mets (35), Nationals-Pirates (32), and Reds-Rockies (25) could also see some showers.
