Ivan Nova (vs. CIN) and Jason Hammel (vs. OAK) don’t have huge strikeout upside, but both are solid veterans with decent matchups in good parks opposite inexperienced starters. If you’re looking for a boom-or-bust type who could rack up points with Ks, Blake Snell (at NYY), Vince Velasquez (vs. NYM), and maybe Zack Wheeler (at PHI) are your guys, but it would shock no one if they couldn’t get past the fifth inning. Rookies Kyle Freeland (vs. SD at Coors Field) and Jordan Montgomery (vs. TB at Yankee Stadium) are also interesting high-risk, high-reward sleepers. Freeland dominated in his first start of the year, while Montgomery posted a 2.57/1.17 line with an 8.9 K/9 ratio in the minors. Snell, Montomgery, and Freeland are all playing in afternoon games.

If you really want to get crazy, Shelby Miller (at SF) will almost certainly be low-owned after a disastrous 2016. While he wasn’t exactly dominant in the spring (6.46/1.50), he did strike out 22 in 15.1 innings, making him similar to a lot of the pitchers mentioned above.
