Saves Sleepers

Based on Sunday’s usage, it looks like Sean Doolittle has taken over as Oakland’s closer. Drew Pomeranz started the eighth inning of a game in which the A’s trailed 3-1, and Doolittle started the ninth. Doolittle has now turned in three straight scoreless appearances with five Ks and should have plenty of value over the season’s final month.

Junichi Tazawa pitched a scoreless eighth inning on Sunday, though it was during a game in which the Red Sox led 6-1. Robbie Ross Jr. finished off the game, and even though it wasn’t a save situation, it might give us an insight into who will get the call the next time Boston has a save chance. For now, Jean Machi is still the “closer,” but after struggling in two straight appearances, both Tazawa and Ross Jr. could be in line for future save opportunities.

Weather Watch

There’s a 48-percent chance of rain in Chicago for the Indians-White Sox game and a 38-percent chance of showers in Kansas City for the Twins-Royals. Other than that, it should be a clear day around the league.
