Grays, a sophomore, attempted to make a tackle with 3:24 left in Saturday night’s game. The cornerback was eventually taken off the field in an ambulance.

“He’s made this tackle hundreds of times, but it was just one of those situations that landed wrong,” Kyle Williams, interim athletic director, said, via The Wichitan. “It was traumatic for all of us, particularly the football players. As a campus, we are thinking about him every day.”

The campus called for a gathering on Monday, and about 700 people attended.

Shortly after it was discovered he had passed away Tuesday night, several of his teammates and members of the community tweeted their support for his family.
