Widely regarded as one of the greatest sportsmen of his generation, Tendulkar has broken numerous records during his illustrious career.

Here, we look at the numbers behind the 40-year-old's test success.

15,837: The number of runs scored by Tendulkar in tests, 2,459 more than nearest rival Ricky Ponting.

51: Tendulkar’s record-breaking tally of test hundreds. South Africa’s Jacques Kallis is his closest challenger with 44.

16: Tendulkar was only 16 when he made his international debut for India in November 1989, when he scored 15 against Pakistan in Karachi.

14: The number of innings it took Tendulkar to score his maiden test century. When he did so, versus England at Old Trafford in August 1990, his match-saving 119 drew great acclaim.

2010: Tendulkar’s most productive year in terms of Test runs came in 2010, when he cracked 1,562 at a sparkling average of 78.

45: The number of wickets claimed by Tendulkar in tests. Although no more than an occasional bowler, he has been known to bowl leg-spin, off-spin and medium-pace.

21: Tendulkar has played 21 test matches since his last five-day hundred, the longest barren run of his career.

7: The number of India test captains Tendulkar has played under. In addition, he led his country in 25 matches between 1996 and 2000.
