Tired of the steady stream of bad news about the floundering re-election effort, Barbara Bush, friends say, has given up reading the newspapers. The president still devours several papers a day. Persistent rumors that Bush is depressed are “exaggerated,” the friends claim. But they say he constantly gripes about his low poll ratings and tells anyone who’ll listen what a good job he’s done.

Thirty minutes before the recent Camp David wedding of Doro Bush LeBlond to Democrat Bobby Koch, the mother of the bride, elegant in a lilac Scaasi, found her husband in his skivvies peering into the closet. “What are they wearing to this wedding.?” he asked. Blue suits, he was told. Bush’s blue suit was back at the White House. Mrs. Bush has told friends that when he escorted his daughter down the aisle, the president wore blue pin-striped white pants, a white cowboy shirt, a navy blazer and a tie provided by the groom.
