Johnson rushed for more than 1,000 yards in his first six seasons, all with Tennessee, including a 2,006-yard season in 2009. But with the Jets last season, Johnson took a significant step backwards with just 663 yards and one touchdown on 155 carries.
“He is somebody that is on a short list of ours that we think could ultimately come in and do some good things for us if we asked him to,” Cowboys executive president Stephen Jones told CBSSprts.com in May.

New York released Johnson in February after he was arrested in January on weapons charges. Johnson was injured in a drive-by shooting in March that resulted in the death of a friend, but Johnson told CBS Sports earlier this moth that he’s ready to play.
“I’ve just been working hard, getting back healthy, getting in shape,” Johnson said. “Now it’s just waiting and working out and seeing what my next situation is going to be.”
