The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer’s fans, known as “Lovatics,” showed support for the star, pointing to her difficult year....

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell criticized $2,000 direct payments in a Friday floor speech, two days before the 116th Congress ends on Sunday. “A huge chunk would essentially be socialism for rich people,” the Republican leader said, before dismissing the checks as a “universal cash giveaway.” Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent, disputed McConnell’s remarks and called out Republicans for being concerned about “socialism for rich people” despite supporting massive tax breaks for companies....

While there are no hard figures yet on how many Americans have already voted or will vote by mail, given the fear of COVID-19, the numbers could soar to as much as 40 percent of the total or more. The early indications are that Democrats hold a huge advantage among the mail-in or absentee ballots that have already been cast. That’s especially true in the few key battleground states that will decide the contest in the Electoral College....

Gallego read about a Democratic city councilman in New Mexico who used to fish with his father, hunt with his grandfather, and was advocating for the protection of wildlife species at the U.S.-Mexico border after founding an organization to encourage Hispanics to access and learn about public lands and waters. Gallego remembers thinking that his party needed more people like Gabe Vasquez to run for office. “When I read he was an avid outdoorsman, a hunter, I thought he was someone who could resonate with the traditionally Democratic male Latino voters in New Mexico and elsewhere who have been sliding away from us,” Gallego told Newsweek....

House impeachment managers sought to use the Republicans’ own words from the past to dispel the notion, held by Trump and other GOP members of Congress, that a president cannot be impeached for acts that do not amount to crimes....

The Biden administration and Democratic leaders from New York to Illinois are stressing that schools should be kept open for students. However, the message has been met with pushback from some labor unions who contend that staffing shortages and inadequate COVID-19 protocols make such a mission impossible. Such a standoff took place in Chicago, as the teachers union voted to return to remote learning temporarily to help keep students and staff safe amid a surge in COVID-19 cases....

The No Tax Subsidies for Stadiums Act will try and live up to its name if passed by Congress. The subsidies used by teams come in the form of tax-exempt municipal bonds derived from taxpayer money that can be requested by the teams for stadium purposes. Of the 57 stadiums built since 2000, 43 were at least partially funded by these bonds. The bill was authored by Representatives Earl Blumenauer, Don Beyer and Jackie Speier, the latter a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform....
