There are always sleepers and value picks to be found based on splits and matchups, but you have to dig deep to find them today. A heavy-hitting righthanded Brewers stack against Phil Hughes looks good, and it always pays off to load up on lefties against Rubby De La Rosa (Update: Arizona will start Archie Bradley instead of De La Rosa tonight.). Colorado hitters get to take aim against Dan Straily in one of the few parks that’s almost as hitter friendly as theirs, so that’s another potential stack in FanDuel and DraftKings contests....

For the early-afternoon slate, there are several interesting stacking opportunities, including the A’s (cheap), Royals (less cheap), and Pirates (decidedly not cheap). In the late afternoon, we like the Blue Jays, Mariners and Giants as teams from which you can find players to make the centerpieces of your FanDuel and DraftKings’ lineups. Of course, these picks are based purely on the numbers, so it’s important you remember players who are simply facing mediocre righthanded pitchers who don’t have a pronounced lefty or righty split (Michael Fulmer at BAL, Miguel Gonzalez at NYY, etc....

The obvious stacks are Nationals righties (vs. Chad Bettis) and Rockies righties (vs. Gio Gonzalez) in Colorado, Cubs righties against Chase Anderson, Tigers lefties against Danny Duffy, and Angels righties against James Paxton. On the pitching side, there are plenty of good options, including a bunch of starters currently on hot streaks (Jose Quintana, Eduardo Rodriguez, Jason Hammel, Danny Duffy, Justin Verlander, Ervin Santana, Jameson Taillon). It shouldn’t be hard to find a good pitcher, regardless of your budget....

In terms of raw talent, Jake Arrieta might be one of the top two pitchers going tonight, but a start in Colorado – just a night after the Cubs marathon game against the Yankees – doesn’t seem like an optimal spot in which to use him. Of course, if he comes through and has a great performance, which he’s more than capable of, you’ll be in the money in big tournaments....

Chris Archer has some trouble keeping the ball in the yard lately, but you still have to like his chances against a Brewers team that leads the majors in strikeout percentage against righties. Similarly, Jameson Taillon has really struggled over his past couple starts, but a matchup against the Padres, who are second in K-rate and fifth worst in wRC+ against righties, is too good to pass up. The biggest risk is obviously Aaron Nola in Colorado, but he hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of his past eight outings, striking out just under eight batters per game in that span....

Of course, we have to point out that Scherzer is one of 16 pitchers starting in the afternoon, leaving only 10 for the evening slate. Our top-six pitchers and seven of our top 10 are going during the day. With no true “aces” on the main slate, Chase Anderson (at STL), Adam Wainwright (vs. MIL), and Dan Straily (at TB) jump out as the best plays. While Straily has an edge in strikeouts, Anderson has been a better pitcher this year....

The five afternoon games feature Bumgarner, Kevin Gausman and Trevor Bauer. In the night slate, Collin McHugh should finally get his first win of the year against a struggling White Sox offense. After nearly throwing a no-hitter against the Marlins in his last outing, Gio Gonzalez faces them again. We obviously can’t expect another one-hitter, but Gonzalez is in position for another terrific start. Also, Masahiro Tanaka has been dealing his past two starts, and he faces a Blue Jays team he dominated the last time he faced them....
