Back in December, we did not know that a pandemic was about to hit us. And while its impact on our lives in the West has been chronicled exhaustively, we hear little about its effect on the most vulnerable people of all – the 1.7 billion women and girls, more than one-fifth of all humanity, who live in rural areas around the world. So let me tell you just how devastating this pandemic has been for them....
Senior doctors at some NHS Trusts have warned hospitals are at risk of becoming overwhelmed by COVID patients with critical care beds running out. More than 35,000 COVID patients are currently in hospitals across the U.K. - more than during the peak of the first wave. Hancock said the U.K. government would “look at all options” to relieve pressures on the NHS following a Guardian report that thousands of hospital patients are to be discharged early to hotels or their own homes to free up beds for Covid-19 sufferers needing life-or-death care....
The department confirmed 12,254 cases in the state over the past week, up from a reported 9,706 last Friday and 8,221 reported last Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. Two counties in the state, Harrison and Fremont, that have below 50 percent of their eligible populations vaccinated reported positivity rates over 30 percent. Iowa reported a 16 percent positivity rate over the last week, making it the sixth-highest in the country, trailing only the 19 percent rate from Nebraska, Michigan and New Mexico as well as a 17 percent rate in Indiana and South Dakota, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention....
Between $192 to $419 million of the nation’s COVID stimulus funds have gone to more than 125 companies that Chinese interests either own or have a significant investment stake in. At least eight of these beneficiaries have a direct tie to the People’s Liberation Army. This concerning list includes Continental Aerospace Technologies, a state-owned defense company that received up to $10 million. Two subsidiaries of China’s HNA Group, a Fortune 500 company involved in aviation and financial services, received up to $1 million each....

As police told it, Adams was shot four times in the neck and chest as she sat in her car on Nov. 16. Three suspects were later arrested in the case and Carruth was arrested as well. According to news reports, he watched the hit from his own car: prosecutors named Carruth “the instigator” of the shooting in court.
