The female fin whale was found on Bolsa Chica State Beach, Orange County, on Wednesday, The Los Angeles Times reported. It was unclear how large the whale was, as The Los Angeles Times reported it was 65-feet-long, while The OC Register reported it was 58-foot. Kevin Pearsall of California State Parks told The Los Angeles Times on Thursday that the whale would be removed in a couple of days....

Melbourne snake catcher Raymond Hoser was called to remove the snake. He told Australian news outlet Nine.com.au: “They are deadly, you get bitten by a tiger snake and it’s pretty intense… They’re quite erratic.” Hoser said snakes will often crawl into the engine cavity of cars, and when the car stops they slither away without being seen. But today, when the car stopped at the gas station, this tiger snake decided to curl up around the pump....

Even some editors less zealous than Shine agree that newspapers, in these murderous times, must take extraordinary steps. Washington Post ombudsman Joann Byrd recently called for the Post to wage a crusade. Readers would get front-page summaries of homicide statistics and reporters would pester “all people in sight” for good ideas. “Don’t the stakes require everybody to try everything?” asked Byrd. The Chicago Tribune, in effect, anticipated Byrd’s idea and pledged last January to “not let the murder of a single child in our metropolitan area go unnoticed” during 1993....

Police officials insisted that the rubber gun was realistic enough to justify Hopper’s split-second decision. A district attorney’s investigation, now underway, may concur. But the shooting only reinforces the impression that L.A. cops are out of control–and in the midst of a scandal over alleged cowboy tactics in its Rampart division, this was a controversy LAPD didn’t need.

It was the worst disaster to strike Mecca in modern times. But violent death has attended three out of the last four pilgrimages. New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers were dispatched to the Brooklyn home of Shabazz, 56, after her daughter found her unresponsive about 4:40 p.m., an NYPD official told Newsweek. The city’s medical examiner responded to the scene and did not believe that the death was suspicious, while police also found no reason to suspect foul play. The cause of Shabazz’s death remained unclear at the time of publication. Her death came only days after two men were exonerated in the assassination of Malcolm X, Muhammad Aziz and Khalil Islam....

Last week police dragged Garrett’s body from the cold waters beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, from which, at the age of 48, he had jumped. On one level, his was just another story of a local hero’s shocking suicide. Garrett had become a popular radio talk-show host. He had a college-sweet-heart wife of 25 years, two daughters and a cavernous, art-filled home in posh Marin. Yet after his death, the newspapers found that his main business venture, a sports-memorabilia auction house, had acquired a reputation for selling fake items, and may have sunk into a financial morass that Garrett could no longer hide and didn’t dare reveal....

The boxer describes in an affidavit a dangerous odyssey of shady characters, unpaid smuggling debts and threats of violence that have followed Puig since he left Cuba in June 2012. Boxer Yunior Despaigne says the smugglers claim Puig owes them money. Puig's smuggling venture was first reported by Los Angeles Magazine. Despaigne says Puig promised 20 percent of his contract to Miami men who set up the smuggling venture. Puig signed a $42 million, seven-year contract with the Dodgers in June 2012....

The trailer crashed into a steel pedestrian bridge and tipped over on Friday, crushing the migrants onboard. It is considered one of the deadliest migrant events in Mexico’s history. Although floods of walking migrants have been apprehended by Mexican authorities, the crash demonstrates how they have not been able to apprehend smugglers who charge migrants thousands of dollars in exchange for potential freedom. “We have been insisting that the causes that originate these unfortunate events must be addressed,” Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said at a news conference....
